Food Donations

We receive food from the Federal Emergency Food Assistance Program and the State Food Purchase Program, and we obtain food from the South Central Food Bank (our nearest Second Harvest food bank).

In addition, we also receive food donations from:

  • the Letter Carriers' annual food drive
  • the Scouting for Food annual food drive (see photo at right for 2007 results!)
  • many smaller food drives sponsored by numerous groups and organizations in our community
  • local churches,
  • grocery stores and other businesses, and
  • group and individual donors...like YOU!

Our needs fluctuate from week to week, however certain times of the year are more conducive to large food drives than others. For example, during May and November we are the beneficiary of several large food drives and our storage areas overflow. February/March and July/August are slower times for donations, and our stocks get low. If you are planning a food drive, let's talk about the most effective timing.

Food donations can be brought directly to the Food Bank or put in specially marked drop boxes at local churches and other organizations in our community. Informed donations are best, please review our guidelines for assistance in determining what can be accepted.

Donations are accepted at our location on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between the hours of 9:30 - 11:30 a.m or during our regular service hours - preferably between 2 and 4:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, or 10 - 12 on Saturday. If this is not possible, please call Ernest Boyd at 814/280-3442. Large donations are by appointment only as they may require delivery to our alternate storage facility.

In addition, donations can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • Stor-All Self Storage, 757 N. Science Park Road
  • The UPS Store, 19 Colonnade Way (Across from Wegmans)
  • Balfurds Dry Cleaning, 215 S. Atherton (corner of Beaver & Atherton)
  • Sovereign Bank State College branches:
    • 1780 S Atherton St
    • 216 W. College Ave.

Please check out our Needs List page to see our current needs.

Financial Donations

Financial donations come in many forms: cash/checks, gift cards, and gift certificates. All are welcome.

For cash donations, we now have the ability for you to donate using your credit card on our secure website with Click and Pledge. Just click this "Donate Now" icon - it's safe and easy!

In addition to the many individual donors, we also receive financial support from:

  • the Centre County United Way,
  • the Emergency Food and Shelter Program,
  • CROP Walk,
  • the State College Area High School's Empty Bowls Project,
  • the Downtown Rotary Club,
  • Religious congregations,
  • and business and service organizations.
We use our cash donations for many purposes:
  • To purchase fresh milk, eggs, and meat to include with our nonperishable orders.
  • For purchases from Second Harvest. We get enormous value for these dollars, as Second Harvest enables us to pay pennies for items such as cereal, salad dressings, and even some frozen meats.
  • To purchase essential foods that might be low in supply on our shelves.
  • For operating expenses such as office supplies and phone service so our clients and volunteers can maintain contact with us.

Such gifts ensure our continued ability to serve our clients!

Did you know...that you can designate part or all of your United Way contribution to the State College Area Food Bank?
